Hodgemoor Dressage 28 December 2025

Hodgemoor Dressage RESULTS
Sunday 28th December 2025, at Waylands Equestrian Centre

The festive spirit was in evidence today at Waylands for the second of two Hodgemoor Dressage competitions… riders, horses, team members and spectators came dressed for, and pre-disposed to, having a jolly time. Mulled wine and other hot drinks flowed, but only to help down the mince pies, marshmallows, biscuits and chocolates. The standard of riding was very high with six tests earning over 65% in marks attributed by the judge for both events (multi regional and national dressage event winner, Rob Waine Rob Waine Dressage https://www.robwainedressage.com/about-rob/).

WINNER. We congratulate the winners of each of the four classes, Annabelle Tripp, 13-year-old Isla French, 15-year-old Lily Hannigan and Louise Maeers and their horses. 16-years-and-under riders were classified alongside the adults and also in junior rankings for rosettes. You can see the full results in PDF at the link above.

CHRISTMAS CHAMPION. The prized horse statue trophy was awarded to Isla French , the champion across the two events, 7 and 28 December. The criteria were marks, achievement compared to previous, youth, Christmas dressing-up and entertainment value as accorded by Rob Waine, Susie Bicknell and Marcus Bicknell (secretary and chairman of the Hodgemoor Riding Association).

AWARDS CEREMONIES. The event was in memory of Geoff Gudgion, long-time treasurer of the Hodgemoor Riding Association, friend and rider at Waylands of the mare Ida who competed beautifully today with Juliet Booth. He died of cancer in the summer of 2025. His family, led by granddaughter Ruby Mayor, made several class presentations and the Christmas Champion award in the company of her sister, mother Sophie, father Bill Mayor and Sophie’s mum, Geoff’s widow Deborah Gudgion.

FUND-RAISING FOR CHARITY. The riders’ entry fees are being donated to Iain Rennie Hospice at Home (now part of Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care) who were so marvellous to Geoff.

THE HOME TEAM. We thank Susie Bicknell who undertook the considerable task of organising the event including entries, Marcus her husband and Christopher their son (scoring). Lana Craker provided the excellent indoor venue at Waylands and her partner Frank, who has made the yard so functional and elegant, was on hand to help. We thank the judge Rob Waine, the reader Jane Braithwaite, and another scorer Judy Burns. Moya Merola was caterer-in-chief and others helped make teas and coffees, thank you all. So nice of the Gudgion family to brave the cold and to be with us on the day.

Dressage results 7 December 2025

For those of you who competed at the successful fund-raising dressage at Windmill Farm on 7 December, there is an added incentive to come to this 28 December event too… the prospect of winning the Golden Horse statuette for the champion across both events. The judges, the HRA Secretary and Chairman will discern the winner on the basis of marks, achievement compared to previous, youth, Christmas dressing-up and entertainment value. Anyone entering both events gets a special rosette.  Geoff’s widow Deborah and daughter Sophie will be there on Dec 28 and have agreed Geoff’s grand-daughters will make the presentation... ten minutes after the last test. As Geoff would have liked, this will be a festive occasion, with mulled wine and other goodies and no doubt some impressive Christmas gear from entrants.
This is an open event, not just for Hodgemoor members, and there is parking for boxes and trailers available. Tests are Intro 1, Prelim 1, Novice 1 and PYO Novice 1 or Elementary 2. We can accept lead rein entries for Intro 1 (HC) even though it is not marked on the entry form. So before Christmas preparations take over, please get your entries in at https://hodgemoor.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/schedule_dressage_waylands_28_december_2025.docx

Dora’s winning photo

Dora’s winning photo

The annual Hodgemoor Wildlife Junior Photography Award was judged on Saturday 2nd September at the Chalfont St Giles village show. There were some super entries.

Congratulations to the winner Dora Hiely-Rayner with her photo of a male Holly Blue butterfly and a honey bee in a blackberry hedgerow. The Holly Blue made a welcome comeback in the UK after years of scarcity in the noughties and likes life in the southeast and Midlands.  The photo was taken in the brambles at the edge of Hodgemoor as you enter from the direction of the White Hart. She wanted to take the photo of the butterfly and was lucky the bee flew in as she was taking it!

Animal-loving Dora is 8 and loves going for walks in Hodgemoor with her whippet puppy Storm. The family goes all together for a walk there at least once a week… it’s exalted company because Dora’s sister Anya accompanied her entry last year with a coloured painting of the Hodgemoor logo which was adopted as the Hodgemoor Riding Association logo for the year.

Well done Dora. Enjoy your glass tankard trophy, your £20 from the Hodgemoor Riding Association and the £20 voucher from Southbank Photography in St Giles for framing the winning picture.

The Hodgemoor Wildlife Junior Photography Award

The Hodgemoor Wildlife Junior Photography Award at the Chalfont St Giles Show.

The Hodgemoor Riding Association and its 300 members sponsor an annual cup and a cash prize in the Junior Photography Section. Since 1999 the Association has raised over £240,000 for the renovation and maintenance of the 6km of horse-riding trails in the woods and nearby, improving this popular amenity for all users, whether walkers, cyclists or horse-riders. The winner each year keeps this engraved one-pint glass tankard, £20 from the Hodgemoor Riding Association (attached to this certificate) and a voucher from Southbank Photography in St Giles for framing of the winning entry or £20 off any order.

To be awarded today 2nd Sept 2023 at the Chalfont St Giles Show.

Hodgemoor Trec 30 April 2023 results

Hodgemoor Trec 30 April 2023 results

Delighted to report that 26 happy riders and their horses competed in the Hodgemoor Trec today, sunny in the morning, overcast but warm in the afternoon. No-one got lost in the wood doing the Orienteering Phase! Thanks to the recently-engaged ebulliently-happy camera-hotshot Alice Bicknell, we present a complete set of photos in high resolution free-of-charge. Definitely worth looking through every one rather than ego-surfing; some wonderful studies in equine and human body language. https://photos.app.goo.gl/eZgR4MKJ1PoSfWS88
This album is open to anyone with the link. Pass it on and enjoy.

There were half a dozen superb performances, maybe the best we have ever seen in the Hodgemoor Trec. In phase 1, those fifteen obstacles requiring control, Maggie Miodek on Phoenix and Coleen Douglas on Indie scored 145 and 144 respectvely out of a maximum available of 150. Amazing. Well done. Katherine Kennedy, Kelly Stokes and Melanie Ralph all got 138. Phase 2 Control of Paces was a tie between Kelly Stokes on Otis and Francesca Jones on Buffy with 48 points out of 60. 15 riders embarked on Phase 3 Orienteering; Laura Newton on Mayday and Sara Caley on Jack got all ten clues correct, all times neatly written, in a total time within 2 minutes of bogie time for 225 out of 240. They were riding as a pair and so lost 10% of their score, otherwise it would have been perfect. And they had fun.

When you add the three phases together and divide the riders into their classes, the results are as follows:

Class 1: 2 Phases: Obstacles and Control of Gaits. Beginners.
Vicki Barras
Clemmie Cullen
Sophia Evans

Class 2: 2 phases: Obstacles and Control of Gaits. Open
Mary Doherty
Alice Labed
Francesca Jones
Kayleigh Dear

Class 3: Obstacles, Control of Gaits, Orienteering. Beginners
Katherine Kennedy
Sarah Staines
Kelly Stokes
Coleen Douglas
Cara Foster

Class 4: Obstacles, Control of Gaits, Orienteering. Open
Sara Caley
Laura Newton
Alison Cheetham

You can download and peruse the full spreadsheet of the results by phase and by class with the link below. To see the results by phase you need to click on the Tabs at the bottom of the screen. Let me know please if there is anything you do not understand. Results with small corrections are below, posted 5 May 2023 MB. Mary Doherty Obstacle 8 should be 5 3 not 5 36,  and for Katherine Kennedy Obstacle 3 should be 7 3 not 78 3. Apologies for the typos. Everyone has their rosettes!

Dressage at Austens 11 April 2022 – results and series standings

Hodgemoor Winter Dressage event at Austens, Twitchells Lane, Jordans, on Sunday 11th April 2022.
I stole this pic off Georgie’s Facebook, thanks! Olivia Warner, Sienna Chambers, Georgie Anne Gammage and Sara Caley (pictured here at Austens) hacked from Dibden Hill which is off Narcot Lane between St Giles and St Peter.

We had 16 riders for the winter dressage on Sunday, nice competition weather. Those that hacked from other yards were pleased to see “SLOW – Horse Event Today” signs down Twitchells Lane and cars did seem to be going quite considerately. Everyone remained very jolly and the riding standards were high. Teenager Eleni Antoniou on Impossivel was unbeatable in Intro Class A with 73.5%, well done. Claire James won class B. In Prelim another teenager Sienna Chambers won Section A and Monique Millington Section B for experienced riders. In Novice, it was a stitch-up for the Bicknells, the only entrants, with Marcus pipping Susie for the first time. Thank you so much to Sacha Hamilton and her band of helpers for organising and for judging, to Jane Braithwaite for writing and to Kevin Malyon for scoring. The updated series points table, with one event to go, is also posted below

Sacha Hamilton at workThe image on the right is of Sacha Hamilton in competition, but not in the Hodgemoor event! She was the judge for us.

I have updated the series standings and you can see them at here.   Percentage marks from each of the Winter Dressage events are averaged (plus a % point to encourage participation at many of the 7 events) to give a series champion in each class and section. In the Intro Walk-Trot class, teenager Eleni Antoniou has jumped into the lead of Section A thanks to her excellent marks at Austens, and Sheila Grimshaw into third. Charlotte Bodega is bumped into second. Similarly in the Section B for experienced riders Nicky West has been toppled by Claire James who hacked over an hour each way to come and compete. In Prelim Charlotte Bodega on Measteg Nancy keeps her place at the top of the less experienced leader board Section A, from Mia Okuyama and Sadie Braybrook, while Georgie Gammage on Fred jumps into the lead of Section B ahead of Delia Gomez Dominguez and Jaimi Roehrig. In the Novice class, Lucy Butler still leads Nozomi Okuyama and Kim Dudko in the less-experienced riders Section A while in the Open section B there is no change; Diana Barham on Mole is in the lead from Delia Gomez Dominguez and Charlotte Fleming. One event to come in this series.

The series trophies and sponsor’s prizes will be awarded early on the evening of the Hodgemoor 21st birthday party on 9th July.

Just one more winter dressage event now,
Sunday 24th April at Widmer Livery Stables, Rawlings Lane, Seer Green.

Dressage results Highclere 27 March 2022

Hodgemoor Winter Dressage event at Highclere, Seer Green, on Sunday 27th March 2022.
We had a full entry list for the winter dressage this morning, and wasn’t it wintery… chiller than earlier in the week and overcast. Everyone remained very jolly and the riding standards were high. Thank you so much to Kevin Malyon and his band of helpers for organising, to Sacha Hamilton for judging and to Jane Braithwaite for writing. Kevin also did a fine job of scoring and Diana Bunyan of marshaling.  The updated series points table will be posted later today.

I had a warm chat with Jacqui Roehrig, the doyenne of Oldefields Equestrian Centre in Seer Green where the penultimate winter dressage was held. She likes the series of local dressage events because it enhances our equestrian community in the local area, especially because of the requirement to hack to the events. She hopes it will continue next year. This is just the sort of feedback which makes the effort worthwhile, so thank you Jacqui.       Marcus.

I have updated the series standings and you can see them at hodgemoor_winter_dressage_results_cumulative_for_publication.   Percentage marks from each of the Winter Dressage events are averaged (plus a % point to encourage participation at many of the 7 events) to give a series champion in each class and section. In the Intro Walk-Trot class, Charlotte Bodega still leads the less experienced riders’ standings and Nicky West the open section. In Prelim Charlotte Bodega on Measteg Nancy has taken over at the top of the less experienced leader board, from Mia Okuyama and Sadie Braybrook, while Delia Gomez Dominguez on Captain is now ahead of Jaimi Roehrig on Chalky (she has more than one horse). In Novice Lucy Butler still leads Nozomi Okuyama in the less-experienced riders while in the Open section today’s single event by Diana Barham on Mole is enough to put her in the lead from Delia Gomez Dominguez and Charlotte Fleming. Two events to come in this series.

Just two more winter dressage events now,
Sunday 10th April at Austens Farm and
Sunday 24th April at Widmer Equestrian.
